Discover the Best AI Tools 2027 for Cutting-Edge Solutions

The best AI tools for 2027, for most people, are one frontier chat subscription at around $20 a month, ElevenLabs for anything with a voice in it, Midjourney for images, Runway for generated video, Descript for editing video without being an editor, and Granola for meetings. That base costs under $100 a month and covers most of what the average team needs.

Everything else below is a specialist. Buy one only when you can name the job it does that your chat subscription can’t.

Prices and version numbers here were checked in late September 2026.

Writing and general work

The standalone AI writing tool mostly stopped being a category, because the chat products absorbed it and charge a fifth as much.

ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month, with a cheaper Go tier at $8. Claude Pro is $20, or $17 billed annually. Google’s AI Pro is $19.99, with a $4.99 tier underneath it, and it’s the sensible pick if your work already lives in Google Docs. Run one of them as a daily driver and keep a free account on another for a second opinion on a draft you don’t trust. Paying for all of them is a hobby.

Jasper is the exception worth money, at $69 per seat per month, or $59 annually. What it sells is brand voice enforced across a team, so eight people produce output that sounds like one company. For a single person writing blog posts, it’s hard to justify.

Writer went further in the same direction and is an enterprise agent platform now, from $39 per user per month. Wordtune still rewrites your sentence five ways for $6.99, though it’s owned by AI21 Labs, and Israeli outlet Calcalist has reported AI21 never closed a widely reported $300M round and is running lean. Use it, but don’t build a documented process on it. Sudowrite at $22 a month is the one to buy if you write fiction, because it’s shaped around novels instead of marketing copy.

Images

Midjourney is on v8.2 and starts at $10 a month. It stopped being Discord-only on 23 August 2024, so you can generate on the web with a Google login, and it’s still what we’d reach for when the picture has to look good rather than be accurate.

ChatGPT Images is free on every ChatGPT tier including the free one, and it beats Midjourney whenever the image has to contain readable text, or when you want to change an image you already have by describing the change.

Google’s is Nano Banana Pro, officially Gemini 3 Pro Image, released 20 November 2025. It’s in the Gemini app and in Search for paid users, and Workspace accounts get it inside Slides and Vids.

Ideogram at $20 a month is worth it if you make posters or ad creative, because typography is the thing it was built to get right. Recraft from $12 handles vectors and brand-consistent icon sets, a narrow job the big generators still do badly. Flux from Black Forest Labs is the one to know if you’re building generation into your own product. Adobe Firefly runs on credits from $9.99 and now covers video and audio too.

Video

Runway is on Gen-4.5 and starts at $12 a month billed annually. It’s where we’d start for generated video.

Google’s video generation is mid-rename. Veo 3.1 launched 15 October 2025 and still serves the API, while Google’s own Gemini page says a model called Gemini Omni is replacing Veo inside the app. Both names are live right now.

For talking-head video, Synthesia starts at $18 a month annually and HeyGen at $29, and they do the job well enough that the choice comes down to which avatar library you prefer.

Descript at $24 a month is the one to hand anyone who isn’t a video editor, because you cut the video by deleting words out of the transcript. Wisecut, now at wisecut.ai, turns long video into short-form clips. Kaiber rebuilt itself around a product called Superstudio, and D-ID still animates still photos.

Voice, audio and music

ElevenLabs is the default and it isn’t close. Plans run from $6 a month to $99 for Pro, and it now covers voice cloning, transcription, dubbing, sound effects and music, having started as a text-to-speech box. Murf is still around if you want a simpler interface for straight voiceover.

Music generation is where the lawyers matter more than the output. Suno shipped v6 on 9 September 2026, built with Warner, BMG and Believe, and charges $8 a month for Pro. It settled with Warner Music Group in November 2025 in a deal reported at around $500M. Then on 18 September 2026, Sony Music and Universal sued Suno again, arguing the new licensed models were trained on outputs from the old unlicensed ones. Udio settled with Universal around 29 October 2025 and switched off downloads as part of the deal, which caused enough of a revolt that it reopened a 48-hour window for people to pull their files out.

Generated music is fine as a background bed on something disposable. Putting it in a client deliverable you’d struggle to re-cut is a bet on how those cases land. Soundraw at $16.99 a month and Mubert both still do royalty-free generated tracks if you want the same thing with cleaner terms.

Getting work done

Notion folded AI into its plans instead of selling it separately, and the catch is that the real version needs the Business tier at $20 per user per month. Free and Plus get a capped trial, and custom agents bill on top at $10 per 1,000 credits.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is $18 per user per month as an add-on on annual billing, a promotional price through December 2026 against a $21 list. Google went the other way and bundled Gemini into every paid Workspace tier with no separate line item, so Business Standard at $14 per user per month includes it. Between the two, Google’s pricing is simpler and Microsoft’s reaches deeper into the files you already have.

Granola is the meeting notes tool that earned its place, free for individuals and $14 per seat for teams. Perplexity is $20 a month for Pro and $200 for Max, and it now ships its own browser, Comet, with an assistant built in.

Design and decks

Gamma generates a full deck from a prompt, at $10 per user per month for Plus and $20 for Pro. Canva bundles its AI into Pro at $144 a year, and for a small team that one subscription covers enough image and layout work to make several tools above unnecessary. Adobe Express at $9.99 is the thing to compare it against. Figma now gives every paid seat a monthly AI credit allowance instead of charging separately. Looka still does logos and still won’t show you a price until you’ve made one you like.

Customer support

This category repriced itself and most people missed it. Intercom charges $0.99 per resolved conversation for Fin and will run it on top of a helpdesk you already own. PolyAI sells an enterprise dialog platform built on its own model. Sierra raised $950M at a $15.8B valuation in May 2026 and Decagon raised $250M at $4.5B in January 2026, so the money in the category is serious.

The number to look at on a demo is the per-resolution price, not the seat price. Support AI moved from charging for seats to charging for outcomes over the past two years, and it changes the maths completely.

Tracking what AI says about you

This one didn’t exist in 2023 and belongs on any 2027 list.

Ahrefs Brand Radar, Profound, Peec AI and Otterly AI all sell a version of the same thing. They run your category’s questions through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers on a schedule, then report which brands get named, which pages get cited, which competitors turn up instead of you, and how you’re described when you do appear.

It matters because buyers ask the chat window now. McKinsey’s State of AI survey, published 25 August 2026 from 1,719 respondents across 97 countries, found close to nine in ten reporting regular AI use in at least one business function. Those people ask these tools which vendor to use, and being absent from the answer costs the same way page two of Google used to.

Tracking it is one job and fixing it is another, which is the generative engine optimization work we do for clients. A dashboard will tell you ChatGPT is quoting a price you retired last year. Getting the page behind that answer corrected is outreach, and no dashboard does outreach for you.

Don’t bother with these

DALL-E was retired from ChatGPT on 30 August 2026. Image generation still lives in ChatGPT under the name ChatGPT Images. Sora is gone too, with the app shut down on 26 April 2026 and the API following on 24 September 2026.

Tome stopped making slides on 30 April 2025 and sells sales intelligence now, so Gamma is the replacement. Copy.ai sells go-to-market automation rather than writing. ChatGPT agent was discontinued in early August 2026 and OpenAI points people to ChatGPT Work. NVIDIA Canvas is still on version 1.4, still tagged beta, with a support page dated 31 October 2023, which means it’s a free download rather than a maintained product.

One rename that trips people up: Grammarly’s parent company became Superhuman on 29 October 2025. The Grammarly product kept its name and kept working.

How to buy without getting stranded

The pattern in all of the above is that general-purpose products ate the single-purpose ones. DALL-E’s replacement is a feature inside ChatGPT, Notion’s AI stopped being an add-on, and Google put Gemini into every Workspace tier at no extra charge. The tools that died were mostly the ones doing one thing a frontier model learned to do in passing.

So a frontier subscription is the base layer, because that’s the part that keeps improving for the same $20 while you do nothing. A specialist earns its place only where you can name what it does that the base layer can’t, and it should be on monthly billing until it’s survived a couple of cycles. Before anything goes into the middle of a process other people depend on, find the export button and check that your work comes out in a format you can take somewhere else.

Check the date on any tool list you read, this one included. There’s An AI For That indexes 54,596 tools by its own count, and the community tracker Killed by AI had 123 discontinued AI products logged as of 12 September 2026. Most roundups are written once and never opened again, which is how you end up reading a 2027 article that recommends something shut down in April.

Common questions

What are the best AI tools in 2027?

One frontier chat subscription at around $20 a month, ElevenLabs for audio, Midjourney or ChatGPT Images for pictures, Runway for video, Descript for editing, and Granola for meetings. Specialist tools earn their place only when you can name what they do that your base subscription can’t.

Which AI tool is best for writing?

For one person, a $20 chat subscription beats a dedicated writing suite costing three times as much. Jasper at $69 per seat makes sense when a team needs one brand voice enforced across several writers, which is a different problem from writing.

What happened to DALL-E and Sora?

OpenAI retired DALL-E from ChatGPT on 30 August 2026 and replaced it with ChatGPT Images. Sora’s app shut down on 26 April 2026 and its API on 24 September 2026.

Are AI tool directories worth using?

For discovery, yes. There’s An AI For That lists 54,596 tools by its own count, which tells you how little the listing itself signals about quality.

How do I know an AI tool won’t shut down?

You don’t, so buy accordingly. Monthly billing on anything unproven, and a working export you’ve tested before the tool becomes load-bearing. Where a feature inside something you already pay for does the job, take that over a startup solving one narrow problem.
